Heatwave Hijinks — Shannon Jones and the Case of the Smoking Server

It was January, the peak of summer, and the Outback was cookin’ like a sausage sizzle at Bunnings. Shannon Jones and his two trusty mates, Billo and Coops, were hired by a remote cattle station way out near Birdsville. The issue? The entire station’s comms system had gone belly-up, and with the mercury pushing past 45°C. The lack of internet and satellite phone service was becoming a serious safety risk.

The boys rolled up in Shannon’s dusty Land Cruiser, its tray packed with solar panels, spare parts, and a mystery box labeled “Plan B.” When they arrived, the manager met them in a wide-brimmed hat and a panic in his eyes. “The main server’s fried, fellas. No emails, no GPS, not even Netflix in the rec room!”

Shannon gave him a calm nod. “Let’s have a squiz.”

Inside the comms hut, it was like walking into a toaster. The aircon was busted, and the poor server sat there wheezing in a pool of its own melted cabling insulation. “She’s carked it,” Billo said, fanning himself with a clipboard. Shannon crouched down and examined the damage. “Overheated and dusty. She needs a bypass job and a new fan. Maybe even a miracle.”

Coops chimed in, “We’ll have to jerry-rig some kind of cooling system if we’re gonna get her ticking again in this heat.”

Never one to back down from a challenge, Shannon set to work. First, he dragged in an old esky, filled it with ice from the kitchen, and mounted a portable fan to blow across it. Then he rerouted the power from the station’s solar array to a backup board he assembled on the fly. “We’ll boot her up on life support,” he said, wiping sweat from his brow.

As the improvised cool-air rig kicked in, Shannon carefully replaced the blown capacitors, re-soldered a few dodgy connections, and gave the server one last look. “Alright, let’s fire her up.”

The server whirred. Lights blinked. The screen flickered. The network sprang back to life.

The manager burst in, phone in hand. “I’ve got signal!” he shouted. “The cattle sensors are online!”

Billo clapped Shannon on the back. “You’ve done it again, mate. A full resuscitation.”

That night, the crew was treated to a feed fit for kings... steak, damper, and icy cold drinks straight from the walk-in fridge. Shannon kicked back under the stars, laptop in his lap, casually tweaking the station’s new temperature alert system.

“Next time,” Coops said, cracking open a ginger beer, “let’s take a job somewhere with shade.”

Shannon chuckled, eyes still on the code. “Where’s the fun in that?”
